Zambeef Products PLC has inaugurated a state-of-the-art Environmentally Controlled House (ECH) for the very first time

Zambeef Products PLC has proudly unveiled its groundbreaking, state-of-the-art Environmentally Controlled House (ECH), marking an exciting milestone as it opens its doors for the first time. This innovative facility is set to revolutionize their approach to livestock management by ensuring optimal conditions for animal health and productivity.

Ms. Faith Mukutu, the CEO of ZAMBEEF Products PLC, recently engaged with poultry outgrower farmers (small and medium enterprises, or SMEs) at the Chisamba Huntley farm, an event marking the inauguration of a cutting-edge Environmentally Controlled House (ECH). This advanced facility, designed to house 45,000 birds per cycle, represents a significant milestone in poultry farming.

The primary goal of this event was to showcase to SME outgrowers how innovation, technology, and sustainable practices can enhance productivity and drive long-term growth within their businesses. The construction and operation of the ECH at Chisamba Huntley is part of a larger investment strategy, which includes a $15 million allocation to the poultry division of the company. This investment is a key component of ZAMBEEF’s overall commitment of $100 million announced three years ago to bolster its various sectors.

The ECH facility is designed to promote optimal poultry health by providing a controlled environment that minimizes stress and disease, which can lead to higher productivity and efficiency. Furthermore, this facility is intended to reduce the environmental footprint associated with traditional poultry farming practices. Ms. Mukutu emphasized that such facilities are not just innovations in poultry farming, but serve as crucial catalysts for inclusive socio-economic development. They have the potential to positively impact the livelihoods of poultry outgrowers, their families, and their employees, creating a ripple effect in the local economy.

This substantial investment aligns seamlessly with Zambeef’s Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) values and supports multiple Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). These include No Poverty, Zero Hunger, Decent Work and Economic Growth, Industry Innovation and Infrastructure, Responsible Consumption and Production, Climate Action, and Partnerships for the Goals.

Additionally, Zambeef’s commitment extends well beyond physical infrastructure; the company has created direct jobs for over 8,000 local workers and indirectly supports thousands more through its extensive value chain, which includes numerous MSME poultry farmers. Ms. Mukutu pointed out the importance of MSMEs as essential partners in this ecosystem. Zambeef provides them with comprehensive technical support, specialized training, and critical market access. This approach not only helps integrate these farmers into a sustainable poultry ecosystem but also plays a vital role in improving their livelihood prospects in the long term.
