Senegal Expands Dual-Purpose Poultry Access Through Farmer Cooperatives

Farmer cooperatives in Senegal are taking a direct role in poultry distribution, helping small-scale farmers access dual-purpose chicks through trusted local networks while building their skills and expanding their flocks.

The National Network of Cooperatives and Savings Groups (RESOPP) has partnered with Couvoir Amar, a local hatchery, to distribute DuoBi dual-purpose poultry chicks to cooperative members across Senegal.

Under the arrangement, chicks reach farmers through an organization they already belong to and trust. The model uses RESOPP’s existing cooperative network to connect poultry producers with improved birds, while farmers learn new skills and develop their flocks together.

Field teams provide support to farmers along the way, helping strengthen their knowledge and capacity as they participate in poultry production. This combination of distribution, learning and field assistance is intended to make it easier for small-scale producers to take part in the poultry value chain.

Dual-purpose poultry are raised for both meat and eggs, giving households opportunities to improve food supplies and earn income from sales. Expanding access to these birds can help rural farmers develop poultry enterprises and strengthen household livelihoods.

The partnership forms part of the World Poultry Foundation’s Poultry Multiplication Initiative (PMI) in Senegal. Launched with local private-sector partner Couvoir Amar, the programme aims to increase the production and distribution of improved dual-purpose poultry inputs to smallholder farmers.

The wider Senegal programme targets more than 3.2 million day-old chicks, 705 Brooder Units and support for over 30,000 smallholder farmers by 2027. The initiative seeks to improve rural livelihoods, strengthen food security and create economic opportunities through a more sustainable poultry supply chain.

By using established farmer cooperatives to reach producers, the RESOPP–Couvoir Amar partnership demonstrates how trusted local organizations can help connect rural communities with poultry inputs, practical knowledge and ongoing support.
