The Lesotho Poultry Industry Association (LePIA) has been established with the goal of fundamentally transforming the country’s poultry sector, fostering growth and innovation within the industry

The Lesotho Ministry of Agriculture, Food Security, and Nutrition, in collaboration with local poultry farmers and various stakeholders, has made significant strides in establishing a new industry association aimed at transforming the country’s poultry sector.

On Saturday, key developments were finalized, laying a solid foundation for a more organized and regulated poultry industry in Lesotho. A comprehensive document outlining the framework and objectives of the newly formed Lesotho Poultry Industry Association (LePIA) has been officially drafted. This document is intended to govern and guide the growth of the poultry sector, ensuring sustainable practices and increased productivity.

An interim committee has been appointed to lead the establishment of LePIA over the next three years. This committee is composed of experienced professionals within the industry, with Kelebone Leisanyane serving as chairperson, Teboho Moekoa as vice chairperson, Rethabile Mokaeane as secretary, and Alida Matsa as deputy secretary. Their diverse backgrounds in agriculture and business will be instrumental in driving the association’s initiatives.

Lekhooe Makhakhe, the Director of Marketing, stressed the importance of maintaining a balanced power dynamic within the committee to ensure all voices are heard and represented. He emphasized the need to create a robust and self-sufficient private sector entity that can thrive independently. Makhakhe also pointed out that securing financial support from both public and private sources will be crucial; this will help avoid dependence on personal or business funds that could hinder progress. Furthermore, he highlighted that consistent communication between LePIA and the Ministry of Agriculture will be essential in navigating challenges and fostering growth.

Makhakhe remarked that the launch of LePIA represents the dawn of a new era for the poultry industry in Lesotho, one that is ripe with potential and opportunity. The association will play a pivotal role in shaping the future of poultry farming, fostering collaboration among stakeholders, and addressing pressing challenges such as biosecurity, access to markets, and enhancing the quality of poultry products.

With the establishment of LePIA, the poultry industry in Lesotho is poised for significant growth and development. This evolution promises to create not only more opportunities for farmers but also to positively impact local businesses and contribute to the region’s overall economic development, Makhakhe added.
