The Zan Breed Poultry initiative in Zanzibar aims to create jobs and provide affordable food options for families

Zanzibar has officially inaugurated the Zan Breed Poultry and Animal Feed Processing Plant, located in Kitope, North Unguja. The ceremony was officiated by His Excellency Dr. Hussein Ali Hassan Mwinyi, President of Zanzibar and Chairman of the Revolutionary Council, and marked a significant aspect of the celebrations for the 62nd Anniversary of the Zanzibar Revolution.

The Zan Breed initiative represents not only a commitment to industrial production but also a strategic investment that aligns with Zanzibar’s objectives to achieve food self-sufficiency. This initiative aims to diminish reliance on imported poultry products while simultaneously fortifying the value chains within the local livestock sector.

The project, which was registered with the Zanzibar Investment Promotion Authority (ZIPA) in 2022, involves a capital investment of USD 105 million. It is anticipated to create over 1,000 employment opportunities and produce approximately 800,000 chickens monthly. In addition, the facility will provide affordable animal feed tailored to support local farmers, thereby enhancing agricultural productivity.

Saleh Saad Mohamed, Executive Director of ZIPA, remarked, “This investment illustrates how a conducive policy environment, complemented by effective public-private partnerships, can lead to meaningful socio-economic outcomes.” He underscored the focus on promoting sustainable, inclusive, and transformative investments that contribute directly to national development priorities and improve the livelihoods of the local populace.

As Zanzibar advances its industrialization agenda, initiatives such as the Zan Breed Poultry and Animal Feed Processing Plant reaffirm the collective responsibility to cultivate an enabling investment climate. This environment is essential for supporting investors while ensuring that community benefits and broader economic enhancements are realized over the long term.
