elea has partnered with Pullus Africa to transform smallholder poultry farming in northern Nigeria

The Elea Foundation for Ethics in Globalization is committed to addressing extreme poverty through innovative entrepreneurial approaches that leverage the transformative capabilities of globalization. Based in Zurich, Switzerland, the foundation aims to create sustainable economic opportunities in impoverished areas around the world.

Pullus Africa, located in Kaduna State, Nigeria, focuses on connecting Africa’s poultry farmers with essential resources like financing, market access, and global agricultural networks.

Poultry farming is a crucial income source for millions of households in Nigeria. However, issues like limited access to agricultural extension services, insufficient financing, scarce inputs, and unreliable market connections have caused this vital smallholder sector to become fragmented. With the increasing demand for affordable protein, it is becoming more urgent to address these challenges.

To overcome these obstacles, Pullus forms farmer clusters, each led by a Pullus-trained Cluster Leader. These leaders play an essential role in coordinating necessary services, facilitating knowledge exchange among farmers, and enhancing production practices. Using a specialized mobile application combined with hands-on extension support, farmers receive thorough guidance on flock management and planning, enabling them to make informed decisions about animal health, timing for sales, and growth strategies.

Backyard poultry farming transforms into a sustainable micro-enterprise, especially benefiting women who often gain access to flexible, home-based income sources. This not only improves their economic independence but also builds greater resilience within their families. Pullus is spearheaded by visionary founder and former poultry farmer Opeoluwa Fayomi, whose personal experiences shape the design of a community-focused model that is both scalable and effective.

In collaboration with elea, Pullus aims to strengthen governance frameworks and advance strategic goals during this critical phase of its development. Together, they are dedicated to expanding this successful model to reach more farmers throughout Nigeria and beyond, ultimately aiding in poverty reduction and enhancing food security in the region.
