The West Africa Food System Resilience Programme (FSRP) and Women in Poultry Value Chain (WIPVaC) have formed a strategic partnership to promote the consumption of locally produced chicken in Ghana, in celebration of WIPVaC’s 8th anniversary. The flagship event for this collaboration was held on Tuesday, April 29, 2025, at the Accra Mall, transforming the venue into a vibrant marketplace filled with the enticing aroma of grilled chicken. The event featured complimentary tastings of flavorful grilled chicken served alongside traditional kenkey and spicy chili sauce, as well as promotional sales of freshly processed and frozen local chicken at significantly reduced prices. Attendees enjoyed a lively atmosphere with vibrant music, surprise performances from local artists, and various forms of entertainment, creating a festive community spirit.
WIPVaC was established to unite women engaged across the entire poultry value chain, encompassing a diverse group of stakeholders, including chicken breeders, traders, distributors, processors of poultry products, and suppliers of essential resources such as maize, soybeans, and day-old chicks. The organization aims to empower its members by creating sustainable economic opportunities through enhanced participation in the poultry sector’s development, ultimately driving inclusive and sustainable growth within the industry.
As part of the Poultry Intensification Programme (PISP), implemented by the Ministry of Food and Agriculture (MOFA) with the support of the FSRP, WIPVaC members have benefited from critical in-kind resources, including day-old chicks, animal feed, vaccines, and comprehensive technical training. Their inaugural production cycle, launched last year, was a resounding success, resulting in a stable supply of high-quality local broilers ready to meet market demands.
“We are immensely proud to commemorate our 8th anniversary by celebrating our achievements and highlighting the remarkable contribution of innovative women in the production of local chicken,” stated a WIPVaC manager, emphasizing the importance of this milestone for the organization.
This partnership aligns seamlessly with the FSRP’s overarching goal of strengthening regional food security by promoting climate-smart agricultural (CSA) practices, enhancing biosafety protocols, and ensuring the full integration of women into commercial value chains.
To date, the FSRP has provided support to 60 poultry farmers across various regions, including Central, Greater Accra, Eastern, Volta, and Ashanti, by facilitating access to credit for 50,000 chicks, along with feed and vaccines. As of now, 25,000 chicks have been successfully distributed, empowering beneficiaries to complete their first-ever broiler production cycle and to establish a sustainable farming model.
During the ceremony, Mr. John Dumelo, Ghana’s Deputy Minister of Agriculture, delivered a keynote address advocating for the development of a robust marketing strategy to enhance the availability of local chicken in response to the increasing consumer demand. He also outlined plans to construct modern processing facilities, which will play a crucial role in strengthening the entire poultry value chain, ensuring quality control, and boosting the competitiveness of local chicken in both domestic and international markets.
