New Market Access for U.S. Poultry and Livestock Products in West Africa

The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), in collaboration with the Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS), has successfully finalized new export health certificates for a range of U.S. animal products aimed at enhancing trade relationships with three Key West African nations.

Senegal: As of October 29, 2024, Senegal officially permitted the importation of U.S. day-old chicks and hatching eggs. This development is significant, as it opens up a new market for American poultry producers, allowing them to export high-quality breeding stock. To facilitate this, exporters need to obtain the relevant health certificates, which ensure that the products meet Senegal’s health and safety standards.

The Gambia: Starting November 7, 2024, The Gambia will also accept U.S. day-old chicks and hatching eggs. This policy change not only provides an opportunity for U.S. poultry farmers to reach Gambian markets but also supports the country’s agricultural development efforts. Exporters are required to acquire the appropriate health certificates that verify the products’ compliance with the country’s import regulations.

Guinea (Conakry): Guinea has extended its import regulations to include live small ruminants, small ruminant semen, and small ruminant embryos from the United States. This policy will come into effect immediately, allowing U.S. breeders to export these valuable genetic resources. The importation of these products can significantly benefit Guinea’s livestock sector, which is essential for food security and economic development. Exporters must secure the necessary health certificates to confirm that these products meet Guinea’s stringent health standards.

This report contains links to the necessary health certificates and additional resources for exporters seeking to navigate the new market opportunities in these West African countries.
