Ghana’s Kuipers Breeders Hatchery Celebrates Milestone in Poultry Production

Kuipers Breeders Hatchery, situated in Amuyawkope, Sege, within the Ada West District of the Greater Accra Region, has proudly marked two years since it hatched its first chicks in Ghana. In a relatively short period, the hatchery has become a cornerstone in Ghana’s mission to achieve self-sufficiency in poultry production. This milestone is not only a celebration of growth and success but also a testament to the country’s progressive efforts in revitalising the local poultry industry.

Established in 2022 and officially commencing production in 2023, the hatchery was constructed on a sprawling 200-acre site. It features modern incubation technologies, automated environmental control systems, and rigorous biosecurity protocols. These innovations ensure the production of healthy, high-quality day-old chicks that are distributed to poultry farmers across the nation. Kuipers Breeders is a sister company to De Heus—known in Ghana as Koudijs Animal Nutrition—which initially entered the Ghanaian market with animal feed solutions. The establishment of the hatchery was a natural expansion of the company’s long-term vision to empower local farmers through comprehensive agricultural support.

The hatchery’s operations hit the ground running, with its first commercial batch of chicks delivered just 18 weeks after launch. In its first operational year alone, Kuipers Breeders recorded an impressive 2,114,119 chicks hatched. That momentum more than doubled in the following year, with total production reaching 5,198,684 chicks. This rapid rise in output reflects both the reliability of the facility and the growing trust it has earned from Ghanaian poultry farmers. The success is further reinforced by improved distribution logistics, dedicated technical support for farmers, and key industry partnerships.

One of the hatchery’s most significant contributions is its role in reducing Ghana’s dependency on imported poultry, which still accounts for approximately 95 percent of poultry consumed nationwide. By increasing local supply through advanced production capabilities, Kuipers Breeders is actively helping to reverse this trend. According to Moses Yaw Maidoo, the General Manager, the hatchery integrates high European and Dutch standards of poultry farming within Ghana’s local framework. This approach ensures that everyone along the value chain—from the hatchery to the end consumer—benefits from superior quality and efficiency.

Sustainability is also a central focus of Kuipers Breeders’ mission. Rather than relying on continuous importation of day-old chicks, the hatchery is working to embed globally competitive practices into local systems. This not only supports the environment but also provides long-term, stable opportunities for Ghanaian farmers. “Our advanced facilities are a testament to our unwavering commitment to providing our clients with only the best quality products and services,” said CEO Jurjen Kuipers. He emphasised the company’s pride in contributing to Ghana’s agricultural development and their optimistic outlook for the future.

As Kuipers Breeders Hatchery commemorates its two-year anniversary, it stands as a beacon of progress in Ghana’s agricultural landscape. The company’s continued dedication to quality, farmer support, and national food security signals a brighter, more self-reliant future for the country’s poultry industry. With each passing year, Kuipers Breeders aims not only to grow in numbers but also to deepen its impact—uplifting rural livelihoods and advancing Ghana’s journey toward agricultural transformation.
