Celebrating Eight Years of Women Empowerment in Ghana Poultry with Chicken Road Show

In a significant move to celebrate eight years of empowering women in the poultry industry, the Women in Poultry Value Chain (WIPVaC) in Ghana is set to organise a vibrant and exciting event, the Chicken Road Show. Scheduled for Tuesday, April 29, 2025, the event will take place within the enclave of the Ministries, precisely at the forecourt of the CLOGSAG Headquarters in Accra. The celebration promises to be a lively affair, featuring free public sampling of hot, tasty, and nutritious grilled chicken, alongside promotional sales of fresh, frozen, and homegrown chicken at discounted prices. Great music will further add a festive mood to the occasion, making it not just a celebration of women’s achievements, but also a strong push for the consumption of locally produced chicken.

WIPVaC, the organising body, is a dynamic umbrella organisation bringing together women involved at every level of the poultry value chain. Its membership is diverse, including maize and soya aggregators, suppliers of day-old chicks, dealers of poultry inputs such as fishmeal, concentrates, poultry drugs, and feed, poultry farmers, egg sellers, chicken and guinea fowl distributors, and poultry product processors. The association’s main objective is to create opportunities for women in the poultry industry, helping them stimulate economic development and drive social impact. By fostering cooperation and collective growth, WIPVaC has become a beacon of progress and resilience for women in Ghana’s agricultural sector.

WIPVaC is also a key beneficiary of the Ministry of Food and Agriculture’s (MOFA) Poultry Intensification Scheme (PIS), an initiative supported under the West Africa Food System Resilience Programme (FSRP). Launched just last year, this scheme provided critical input credits such as day-old chicks, feeds, vaccines, and technical training for broiler production. Thanks to this support, WIPVaC’s members are currently completing their first cycle of broiler production, with chickens now ready for the market. The initiative has breathed new life into many poultry farms and businesses that were on the verge of collapse, showing tangible results within a short period.

Ms. Emelda Adii, the FSRP’s Gender Focal Person, emphasized the project’s impact in an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA). She explained that the intervention not only revitalises struggling farms, but also provides women with the resources they need to maintain their families, especially in the face of mounting climate change difficulties. She believes that empowering women in agriculture, particularly in the poultry business, is a key step toward increasing resilience and ensuring food security in Ghana.
