Empowering Ghana’s Youth: KIC and Premier Poultry Join Forces to Boost Agribusiness

In a substantial attempt to foster youth entrepreneurship and improve food security in Ghana, the Kosmos Innovation Center (KIC) has collaborated with Premier Poultry Limited, a leading agribusiness based in Kumasi. This collaboration aims to provide young people with practical poultry farming skills, allowing them to start sustainable enterprises and contribute to the country’s agricultural industry.

Premier Poultry Limited plays a crucial role in the poultry industry by brooding day-old chicks for six weeks before distributing them to smallholder farmers. This process ensures that the farmers receive strong, healthy birds that have a better chance of survival and increased productivity. By integrating young entrepreneurs into this value chain, the initiative aims to create employment opportunities while improving food security and nutrition in local communities.

Transforming Young Lives Through Agribusiness

Abena Owusu, a key beneficiary of this effort, told her success story, highlighting the program’s impact on her entrepreneurial journey. “Thanks to KIC, its partners, and Premier chicken, I was able to launch my own chicken business. “I now have a steady income and can better support my family,” she explained. Her narrative exemplifies the initiative’s overarching goal of providing young people with the information and resources they need to start successful agricultural companies.

KIC has long been committed to driving agricultural transformation in Ghana through innovation and strategic partnerships. The Executive Director of KIC, Benjamin Gyan-Kesse, emphasized the crucial role that poultry farming plays in the country’s agricultural economy. He explained that the initiative aligns with KIC’s broader mission of strengthening agribusiness by equipping young people with the necessary skills, knowledge, and financial support to establish their ventures.

A Broader Vision for Youth Empowerment

This collaboration is part of a wider effort known as the effort for Youth in Agricultural Transformation (IYAT), which KIC is conducting in partnership with the Mastercard Foundation. The IYAT initiative aims to provide young people with decent employment and entrepreneurship opportunities in Ghana’s agriculture industry. KIC is working to close the gap between young unemployment and agribusiness development by harnessing the resources and experience of organizations such as Premier Poultry Limited.

Paving the Way for a Sustainable Agricultural Future

With youth unemployment remaining a pressing challenge in Ghana, initiatives like this one are crucial in providing young people with viable career paths in agriculture. By fostering collaborations between key industry players and aspiring entrepreneurs, KIC and Premier Poultry Limited are making a lasting impact on the country’s agricultural sector.

This initiative serves as a model for how strategic partnerships can drive innovation, economic growth, and food security, ultimately transforming Ghana’s agribusiness landscape for the better. As more young people embrace opportunities in agriculture, the future of Ghana’s food production and economic stability looks promising.
