Poultry farming has been a source of hope and empowerment for many communities, particularly in rural places such as Zamfara State, Nigeria. The British American Tobacco Nigeria (BATN) Foundation recently launched a transformative project in partnership with the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security and the Zamfara State Ministry of Agriculture and Natural Resources to improve women’s livelihoods through poultry farming. This initiative has successfully empowered 200 women from all 14 local government areas in Zamfara, providing them with the materials they need to start a chicken farm. At the program’s official debut in Gusau, Oludare Odusanya, the BATN Foundation’s general manager, underlined the organization’s commitment to aiding the local community by investing in the potential of these strong women. Each participant in the program received 20 five-week-old broilers, along with a bag of specially formulated feed and essential multivitamins to promote sustainable poultry farming practices.
The program aims to promote long-term development and economic empowerment as well as give immediate resources. Odusanya stressed that by cultivating these women’s entrepreneurial energy, the organization hopes to improve food security and strengthen community ties. Poultry farming provides a long-term source of income, allowing families to raise their living standards while also contributing to the local economy. The 200 beneficiaries were carefully picked to ensure that they were truly committed to making a difference in their communities. Hajiya Hurriyya Dauda Lawal, the wife of the Zamfara state governor, echoed these sentiments during the launch, commending the BATN Foundation for its efforts in supporting women in the state.
